Introduction
Forensic psychology is a specialized field that
applies psychological knowledge and techniques to the legal system. It involves
the intersection of psychology and law, and forensic psychologists often work
directly with the legal system to provide expert opinions, conduct assessments,
and consult on various cases.
Intersection of Psychology and Law: Forensic
psychology bridges the gap between psychology and law by applying psychological
principles to legal matters.
Specialized Knowledge: Forensic psychologists
possess specialized knowledge in areas such as criminal behavior, mental health
disorders, and the legal system, allowing them to effectively contribute to
legal proceedings.
What is narcoanalysis?
A Narco analysis test, also known as a Narco test, is a procedure that involves injecting sodium pentothal (also known as
“truth serum”) into a person to induce a hypnotic state.
The drug reduces the person’s
self-consciousness and allows them to speak freely, which is believed to result
in truthful answers.
The test is conducted under the supervision of
a psychologist, forensic expert, or investigating officer.
Purpose
of Narcoanalysis
Narco analysis test in India is an
investigative type of tool which requires the injection of sodium pentothal, a
substance that has the tendency to bring a subject into a hypnotic or drugged
state and neutralizes the subject’s imagination, and expects them to reveal the
truth
Narco analysis should only be used in serious
cases, such as terrorism, organized crime, serial killings, and cases where no
evidence is available.
Steps
in a Narcotest
There are 6 Steps in a narco analysis test
Preparation: The individual undergoes a physical
examination to ensure they are fit for the procedure. Medical history and any
existing conditions are assessed.
Drug
Administration: A
sedative drug, typically sodium pentothal or sodium amytal, is administered
intravenously. The dosage is carefully monitored to induce a state of
semi-consciousness.
Questioning: Once the individual is in this state,
questions related to the investigation are posed. The questions are typically
asked in a calm and repetitive manner.
Monitoring: Medical professionals monitor the
individual’s vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure their safety.
Recovery: After the questioning is complete, the drug is
allowed to wear off naturally. The individual is then monitored until they are
fully conscious.
Recording
and Analysis: The
entire session is typically recorded, and the responses are analyzed by
experts. It’s important to note that the reliability of the information
obtained through narco analysis is often questioned.
Outcome
of Narcotest
The apex court held that narco tests violate
the fundamental right against self-incrimination under Article 20(3) of the
Constitution, which states that no person accused of any offence shall be
compelled to be a witness against himself
Career
in Forensic Science
Forensic career is a field that applies
psychological knowledge and techniques to the legal system. Forensic
professionals work with law enforcement, courts, and other legal entities to
provide expertise on various psychological matters, such as criminal profiling,
expert testimony, and victim counseling.
Conclusion
Narco Analysis is a controversial technique
used to obtain information from individuals under the influence of a sedative
drug, has been widely debated due to its reliability and ethical implications.
While proponents argue that it can yield
valuable information, critics raise concerns about the potential for false
confessions, coercion, and violations of individual rights. The legality and
use of narco analysis varies significantly across jurisdictions, and its ethical status
remains a subject of ongoing debate
